Gawler Ranges Aboriginal Corporation

ESS has worked collaboratively with Traditional Owners from the Gawler Ranges to develop and implement a tailored cultural heritage database.

The cultural and Ecological Information Management System created through this process is now used as an effective site conservation and management tool, providing site maintenance schedules and management requirements of rock holes and other cultural sites.
On-site training provided by ESS has increased local field-based data collection capacity and ensured that standards for collecting and recording data are met by all cultural heritage projects (including external researchers).
Overall, the project has enabled Traditional Owners from the Gawler Ranges greater control over their cultural heritage and traditional knowledge and to have this knowledge guide cultural site protection.
