Ngadju people are the Traditional Owners of the country between Kalgoorlie and Esperance in southern Western Australia. They are responsible for looking after the cultural and natural heritage of this country, which is slightly larger than the UK.
ESS has provided Ngadju with a cultural heritage and traditional knowledge management system that allows them to record and display information about their culture and country. This system also combines a work planning and reporting function that they can use to plan, track and report on fee-for-service contracts delivered by their land management team.
The system has allowed Ngadju to collect and map a variety of cultural information, mainly around language and traditional knowledge. A specific focus since system implementation has been to use the system’s spatial tools to record the location and details of ‘water trees’, which they revisit to look after according to cultural protocols.
The work planning and reporting tools have also improved the reliability and sophistication of the data that can be collected and presented back to fee-for-service contractors, which has enabled significant advances in the delivery land management projects.
